Healing Is Attractive
You know what’s actually attractive?
Healing.
People who communicate. People who apologise. People who take accountability. People who know what they want.
When you heal, you stop repeating cycles, and start choosing partners, not patterns.
I posted those lines some time ago, and my phone did not stop buzzing for two days. Clearly they touched something. So let me sit with the thought a little longer, because in my line of work I get to watch this play out across hundreds of drawing rooms, and I promise you it is not just a nice caption.
What I mean by healing
Let me say first what I do not mean. I do not mean you must arrive at my door serene, sorted, and entirely at peace with every chapter of your past. I have been doing this for over a decade and I have never met that person. I am not sure I would trust them if I did.
Healing, as I see it, is simpler and harder than that. It is knowing your own history well enough that it stops making your decisions for you. The engagement that ended badly. The parent whose approval you are still chasing. The relationship where you learnt to go quiet instead of speaking up. None of these disqualify you from love. They only become a problem when they sit invisibly at the table, ordering for you.
The patterns I can see from across the table
When I meet someone new, I am not only listening to what they want in a prospective match. I am listening to how they speak about the people who came before.
There is a world of difference between “it did not work out, and honestly, some of that was me” and a forty minute case against every person they have ever met. The first tells me this person has done their homework. The second tells me the next introduction will be auditioning for a role in an old play.
I have seen brilliant, accomplished people reject a lovely match in the first meeting because something small, a phrase, a mannerism, a profession, rhymed with an old wound. And I have seen the same people, a year and some honest reflection later, meet someone remarkably similar and see them clearly. The match did not change. They did.
Why healed people are easier to introduce
Here is the practical truth from inside the practice. The clients who have done this work are simply easier to find the right person for, and not because they are less particular. Often they are more particular. But their particulars are real.
They give feedback plainly, so every introduction sharpens the next one. They can say no kindly, without needing to make the other person wrong. They do not perform in the first meeting, which means the person sitting opposite them gets to meet someone true, not a highlight reel. And when the right person does arrive, they recognise them, because they are no longer squinting through the fog of the last one.
Families feel it too. A mother once told me, after meeting a prospective match for her son, “that girl knows herself.” It was the highest compliment in her vocabulary, and the Roka happened within the year.
You will not find it on a biodata
No biodata has a column for accountability. Education, family, height, all present and correct, but nowhere does it say “apologises well” or “does not sulk.” Which is rather like describing a house by its postcode and never mentioning whether the roof leaks.
That is one reason I sit with people rather than sort papers. Ten minutes of honest conversation reveals more than ten pages ever will. The healing shows. It shows in how lightly someone carries their past, in how they speak about their family, in whether they can laugh at themselves without putting themselves down.
Where to begin
If you are reading this and quietly totting up your own unfinished chapters, good. That noticing is the beginning, and it puts you ahead of most.
You do not need to be finished healing to begin looking. You only need to be honest about where you are, with yourself, and with whoever is helping you look. Do that, and something lovely happens: you stop attracting what you are used to, and start choosing what you actually want.
And that, I maintain, is the most attractive quality of all.
